KNRQ August 28, 2014

So, by now, if you’ve been reading long enough, you’ve probably figured out that I’m going up the fm dial by frequency, alphabetically by call letters, then in date order, oldest to newest. So, why am I posting about KNRQ today when it’s at 97.9? Well, it’s not anymore. Back in 2009, Cumulus Media was granted a construction permit to move 97.9 KNRQ from Eugene to Portland. After a couple extensions, that move finally took place over the weekend of July 27-28, 2013. About a year after Cumulus applied for the move of 97.9 to Portland, KXPC, which at the time was broadcasting a country format under the name Pure Country 103.7, went silent due to financial problems. It took about a year, but the station was eventually sold to the Educational Media Foundation, and the station returned to the air as a K-Love outlet. However, K-Love was already on the air in that area on 107.1 fm, so when Cumulus got ready for the move of 97.9 to Portland, they swapped stations, and Cumulus moved the alternative format of KNRQ to 103.7, which in tern moved from about 40 miles away directly into the Eugene market. Here’s what the station sounded like a year or so later.
